Movieworld closure: Is anyone listening? Over 30 years a staple in Eastern Queens and one of the cheapest tickets in town. Movieworld was much more than a place to watch movies. It was a cooling center for seniors, a place where young romances took off and a place where our neighborhood kids used as recreation.
Movieworld is where grandpa and grandma took the grandkids to the movies and some for the very first time. It wasn’t just about sampling a hotdog or popcorn or playing with the video machines. It was a small business right here in Eastern Queens being pushed out by elected officials, community board and of course a large corporation all working in coordination. Movieworld gets pushed out so that LOWES can usher in a garden center. Can you believe it, a garden center? Like we needed a garden city in Eastern Queens. What about Garden World up on Horace Harding and Francis Lewis Blvd? One small business after the next is being pushed out of town.
Many in the community are upset and hate to see Movieworld go. But the Auction took place the equipment has left and the doors are closed. Movieworld is an example of no one advocating for the neighborhood and no one standing up for the little guy.
